Review: 2020 Honda Civic Type R Updates & New Features

Last month the 2020 Honda Civic Type R made its US debut at the Chicago Auto Show and it did so sporting its new Boost Blue exterior color. The updated, eye-catching Civic Type R received a bunch of updates and a host of new features for 2020. The Type R goes on sale in our Dublin Honda showroom at the end of 2020, so let’s take a moment to review what we have to look forward to.

Revised Styling

Refinement here, refinement there. Refinement, refinement everywhere! The Civic Type R continues to sport its race car good looks, and for 2020 includes:

  • new Alcantara™-wrapped steering wheel
  • new suede-wrapped shifter
  • restyled knob and shorter shift throws

Improved Handling & Braking

Now equipped with new two-piece brake rotors and brake pads, the 2020 Civic Type R is better equipped to reduce fade and improve high-speed braking efficiency. Plus, its received some updates to its suspension as well, including:

  • updated dampers for improved ride comfort
  • stiffer rear bushings for better grip
  • revisions to the front suspension and steering for even better steering feel

Better Engine Cooling

The 2020 Civic Type R also sports a redesigned grille, which allows for better engine cooling especially when operating under high demand.

Powerful Engine

The 2020 Civic Type R gets its power from a race-bred 2.0-liter direct-injected and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with VTEC valvetrain. It puts out a peak 306 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, and distributes power to the front wheels through a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.

As with earlier models, drivers can control their ride quality by using the Civic Type R’s three distinct driving modes – Comfort, Sport and +R. Toggling between modes provides varying suspension firmness, steering, and throttle response.

Honda Sensing

Now standard on the Civic Type R is Honda Sensing, Honda’s advanced suite of driver-assistive safety technologies. Standard features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure alert and lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control
