For decades, Honda vehicles have earned top-marks for safety, in both passenger safety and vehicle safety. The safety of Honda cars has become such common knowledge that nowadays when Honda-drivers are asked if their car is safe, it’s not uncommon that they respond, “It’s a Honda.” It’s a Honda, safety is evident.
Always the innovator, and often the leader in developing safe cars and advanced safety technologies, Honda is back at it with another new, innovative technology — a new and improved passenger front airbag.
In partnership with Autoliv, Honda’s new airbag is designed to better protect occupants in a wide range of frontal collision scenarios, including angled crashes between vehicles or a vehicle and another object. Honda anticipates including its advanced airbag design to new Hondas sold in the US in 2020. Let’s take a look at what that entails.
New Airbag Design
Conventional airbag systems rely on a single inflatable compartment. Honda’s new design uses four major components:
- Three inflated compartments: one center chamber and two outward-projecting side chambers, which creates a wide base across the dash.
- One “sail panel” that stretches between the two side chambers at their outermost edge.
Honda likens the deployment of this new design to a baseball catcher’s mitt. The sail panel effectively “catches” and decelerates the occupant’s head while simultaneously engaging the side chambers. The side chambers then pull inward to cradle and protect the passenger’s head, effectively mitigating the potential for injury.
How the Design Came to Be
Honda’s next-generation of airbag technology is the result of studying real-world crashes, in tandem with conducting research and aggressively testing prototypes. But really it begins with Honda’s “Safety for Everyone” commitment.
“Safety for Everyone” is Honda’s commitment to improving the safety of everyone on the road. That means taking steps to create a collision-free mobile world for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, motorcyclists, bicyclists, occupants in other vehicles, and so on. Safety for everyone means everyone. And Honda’s new airbag is a big step forward in turning their goal into our driving reality.
